Selling a boat in Michigan is a simple procedure. Remember, that every boat operating in Michigan waters must be registered and have a registration decal (sticker). After selling your watercraft, all you have to do in order to transfer ownership is complete the back of your watercraft registration and provide it to the buyer. If the registration or title is lost or destroyed, you can obtain a duplicate at a Secretary of State office or online through ExpressSOS. However, it is not required, as you can transfer ownership by completing a bill of sale.
For the ownership transfer to be valid, the Michigan Bill of Sale for a Boat has to contain the following information:
If you use this form to sell a trailer or a trailer coach, you must attach the previous registration to this document. If you cannot provide it, ask a weighmaster to certify the weight of the trailer you sell.
If your watercraft is 20 feet and longer or has a permanently affixed engine, it must be titled. In this case, the ownership is transferred by a properly assigned title. If the title is lost, a duplicate can be requested online or at a Secretary of State office. As an option, a surety bond or court order can be used for ownership transfer.
