Alternate Name:
The Massachusetts Off-Highway Vehicle Bill of Sale is a required document. It is a necessary part of the registration process. The document itself is a simple one-page form specifically designed for buying and selling all types of off-highway vehicles (OHVs), also referred to as recreational vehicles.
According to Massachusetts law, in order to operate an OHV on private or public property, your vehicle must have a registration number issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. An out-of-state registration is not considered valid.
After buying a new or used OHV, the first thing you have to do is register it. The registration can be done either by mail or in person in one of five registration offices. You will need to provide the following documents:
Do not forget to have the appropriate fee and vehicle identification number. After you submit all of the required documents and fees, the state will provide you with a registration number, a registration card containing the number of your vehicle, and an expiration decal. The registration you receive is valid for two years if you are a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and one year if you are not. You can renew your registration online. You are not allowed to operate an OHV without the registration card and you must have it on you every time you operate your vehicle. Law enforcement officers and property owners can ask to see your registration card and you must provide it for inspection.
The document must include the following information:
The seller provides the original document to the buyer and keeps a copy. Note, that this document is traditionally filled out only to record the sale of snowmobiles and recreational vehicles. For all other types of vehicles, as well as for watercrafts, use the government-released Recreational Vessel/Vehicle Bill of Sale.
Massachusetts does not require a notary public's certification for sales but it is generally a good idea to have a notary or witness to a sale in order to confirm the transaction has taken place. This can save any potential trouble which might occur should the seller or buyer contest the transaction at a later date.
