Dog Dental Chart: What Is It?

A Dog Dental Chart demonstrates the number of teeth that dogs should have and describes their role so that dog owners can have a better understanding of the physiology of their dog's jaw. This will allow them to decide on the correct treatment if a dog experiences any dental issues and to monitor tooth development in dogs from birth to their full maturity and beyond.

Alternate Names:

  • Dog Tooth Chart;
  • Canine Tooth Chart.

Dogs enjoy chewing on pretty much everything that they can find and the structure of the jaw and teeth are designed to allow them to easily consume meat, cartilage, bones, and other things. Importantly, each tooth has a distinct function that is crucial for the animal.

Dogs develop forty-two teeth in adulthood. However, they don't possess the same amount of teeth on the top jaw and bottom jaw, as is demonstrated in the illustration on the Dog Tooth Chart. Mature dogs will have two extra molars on the lower jaw. On the other hand, if you have a puppy then do not worry if you can only count twenty-eight teeth – this is perfectly normal for puppies.
