How to File for Divorce in Ohio?

Here is what you must do to dissolve your marriage in the state of Ohio:

1. Fill out a dissolution of marriage petition, outline your income, assets, debts, and expenses - both parties are obliged to offer these details without attempting to deceive each other, and draft an Ohio Divorce Agreement. The latter document has to specify the reason behind your separation and set forth mutual rights and responsibilities of the spouses they have before and after the divorce is finalized.
2. Note that if you have kids younger than 18, there are supplementary documents to submit to the court - provide personal details of your children, describe the health insurance the children will be entitled to, and demonstrate your willingness to cooperate with the other parent in order to raise and financially support the kids.
3. File the paperwork with the local court of common pleas . Make sure you choose the correct court - at least one of the parties has to permanently live in the county for three months. Submit two copies of the documentation (three if minor children are involved) and pay a filing fee. Once this is done, the clerk will indicate the number of the case and notify you about the upcoming hearing - at a minimum, you will have to wait for a month.
4. Complete a dissolution of marriage decree prior to the hearing and bring the statement to the court . When the judge verifies the conditions of the separation are satisfactory and neither party is favored, they will sign this document confirming your intentions to end the marriage and making the divorce official.
