What Is a Vessel/OHV/Snowmobile Vehicle Bill of Sale?
This form - known as the Vessel, OHV, Snowmobile Vehicle Bill of Sale Template - is used when purchasing or selling snowmobiles and off-highway vehicles (OHVs) and is an official Colorado boat bill of sale form. You are required to fill out this document every time you buy or sell any of the abovementioned vehicles or vessels within the state. The form is a legally binding agreement that proves the transfer of the item from one party (the seller) to another (the buyer). If properly completed, it is accepted as material evidence of the sale by all officials of the state. Does a Boat Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in Colorado?
This document does not require notarization. The parties may voluntarily choose to have the bill of sale notarized to verify the identity of the individuals signing the document.
How to Sell a Boat in Colorado?
Both the seller and the buyer need to have a copy of this document. For the buyer, the bill of sale is extremely important, since it is:
- Used during the boat registration. Since 2017, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife requires all individuals applying for a watercraft registration to provide acceptable proof of ownership (the bill of sale that contains all necessary information);
- Accepted as temporary permission to operate the boat. When you purchase a watercraft in Colorado, you have up to 30 days to apply for registration. During this period, you can operate your boat if you have a valid bill of sale that will serve as temporary permission;
- Applied as the purchase receipt containing all essential details of the deal.
The seller will need this document in order to:
- Prove the release of liability from the date of sale;
- Check the important details when filling out the tax forms.
The boat bill of sale in Colorado does not require notarization to be considered legal.
To sell a boat in Colorado and to secure yourself from possible legal issues and claims in the future, follow these simple steps:
- Check your boat's condition and make all necessary repairs;
- If the watercraft you sell has any defects, inform the prospective buyer about them;
- Look through the documents for your boat and make sure you have all the necessary permissions and all documentation required to transfer the boat ownership at hands. Remember that since January 1, 2019, all motorboats and sailboats operated in Colorado waters must have the stamp confirming the vessel has passed the Aquatic Nuisance Species check;
- Prepare two copies of the Colorado boat bill of sale. Keep one with your documentation and provide the other to the buyer. The bill of sale you prepare must contain: the physical address of the buyer, year, make, and model of the sold watercraft, the Hull identification number of the boat assigned by the manufacturer, date of sale, printed name and signature of the seller, printed name and signature of the buyer;
- Hand the bill of sale, the Certificate of Title, and other pertinent documents to the new owner.
To remove your name from the boat registration, notify the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Division about the sale of your watercraft.
