A Maine Transfer on Death Deed is a handwritten or typed statement that outlines the details of the property transfer from one party to the other and enters into force when the property owner dies. Often titled a "Beneficiary Deed", this legally binding statement may name one or several beneficiaries who will inherit any type of property indicated in the deed and can be revoked at any time before the property owner passes away. Title 18-C of the Maine Revised Statutes obliges the grantor to name one or more beneficiaries who will be able to use the property upon the original owner's death and submit a copy of the deed to the local registry of deeds.
