A Maine Deed of Trust is not described in the Maine Revised Statutes, however, the statutes do not preclude individuals from using it as an alternative to a mortgage. The purpose of this type of deed is to secure the debt of the borrower and make certain that it will be returned on terms provided by the deed. The borrower transfers the title of ownership of their real property to secure their debt. When the loan is paid in full, the title of ownership is transferred to the borrower.
