A Fundraising Plan is a way to lay out the goals, objectives, and challenges for raising money, usually for a non-profit or school, and how that money will be spent by the organization. This can be an annual Fundraising Plan or a multi-year Fundraising Plan, but the purpose is to clearly lay out how the entity plans to raise funds that will allow it to keep its doors open.

Before you begin drafting your Fundraising Plan, you will want to brainstorm with the directors, department heads, and any stakeholders to assess what the goals are for your organization and how you plan to achieve them. Once you have accomplished this, you can create a Fundraising Plan that will include the following sections:
The first step to creating a strategic Fundraising Plan is to define what the goal or goals will be. You will want to determine how much money your organization will need to raise if you are planning to add additional employees to your staff, and a long-term goal for the organization (for example becoming the highest performing school in your district).
Next, you will want to complete a mission statement. This section will lay out the how's and why's of your goals, such as:
It is very important to have answers to these questions clearly laid out so that you can develop a Fundraising Campaign Plan that will accurately reflect what will be needed both short-term and long-term (if you choose to have an additional multi-year Fundraising Plan).
Once you have these questions laid out you will then want to create the plans to fulfill these goals. Here is where you will lay out your tactics and how much money you plan to raise from each one. Ideas for fundraising can include direct mail, telemarketing, events, e-giving, and so on.
With each event, you will want to include how much money you plan to raise, and how much you want to receive from individual donors, corporate donors, and government agencies (such as grants). You will want to have a good mix of ideas and tactics for raising funds to ensure target goals are met. Don't forget to include the costs of completing each tactic to get a clear picture of how much funding you will need to raise. For example, if you are putting on an event, you will want to include the cost of food, staff, rentals, and anything else needed and add that total to the fundraising goal.
Finally, you will want to lay out a timeline for your Fundraising Campaign Plan. This can look something like a calendar of events, with both big and small tactics listed, and all the details needed to complete each tactic so that nothing is forgotten.
