What Is Form REG 343?

Form REG 343, Application for Title or Registration , is a legal document that allows the owner of a motor vehicle to apply for a California vehicle title and registration. It is used for vehicles registered for the first time and nonresident vehicles brought into California. Additionally, it is completed to reregister vehicles after they have been salvaged, junked, or removed from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) database.

The owner of the vehicle must submit the California Application for Title or Registration within twenty days of the date the vehicle is first operated in California along with the appropriate fees. Also, you need to present proof of vehicle ownership, insurance, out-of-state title, and registration if you are transferring your title to California, and a valid smog inspection certificate.

How to Fill Out REG 343 Form?

Form REG 343 instructions are as follows:

  1. Describe the vehicle - state its identification number, make, model, fuel type, license number, model or series, body type. Indicate the type of vehicle. If it is a motorcycle, write down its engine number, and state the length and width for trailer coaches. If you have a commercial vehicle, attach a declaration of its weight and a motor carrier permit if needed, and indicate its number of axles and unladen weight.
  2. Provide the owner information - full name, physical and mailing addresses, driver's license number. You may add more than one owner.
  3. Enter the lienholder's or title holder's details - full name, physical and mailing addresses, and electronic lienholder ID number.
  4. Record the current odometer reading or state the odometer discrepancy.
  5. Indicate several dates: when the vehicle enters California; when it is first operated there; when you went to work in the state obtained a California driver's license, or became a resident; and when the vehicle was acquired. Specify whether the vehicle was new or used and if it was purchased within California.
  6. Write down the total cost or value of the vehicle . State from whom you have purchased or acquired the vehicle. If the vehicle was a gift, prepare Form REG 256, Statement of Facts. It is possible to title and register a vehicle after you modify or alter it if you provide Form REG 5036, Statement of Construction.
  7. Enter the amount of sales tax paid and dispose of the out-of-state plates . If the vehicle was registered in another state as a commercial vehicle, check the appropriate box.
  8. Claim a nonresident military exemption, if you or your spouse are eligible.
  9. Certify the information in the form is true, print your name or name of the company you represent, sign, and date the document . Submit the REG 343 Form with the required supporting documents to your local DMV office.
