How Long Is a Bill of Sale Good for in South Carolina?

The state of South Carolina does not require you to complete a Bill of Sale when selling or buying minor items. You complete the document for your safety and that of your buyer. State laws do not regulate its content but at the same time, it is necessary for the document to contain the sale's date as it takes effect from that date onward.

The document should include another piece of information such as the following:

  • Name and address of the seller and co-sellers;
  • Name and address of the buyer and co-buyers;
  • Full description of the transferred item. The description is necessary in order to identify the sold item clearly, so it must be detailed and complete. The details you may indicate include the color, model, size, year, serial number, and other pertinent information. If you include any additional items or accessories in this sale, list and describe them as well;
  • Defects. If the item you sell has any defects, include their description in the document;
  • Terms of sale. On top of the date of the sale mentioned above, you have to indicate the sales price. It is better to enter it both in words and in digits. If your transfer includes any additional terms, it is better to document them on this form instead of leaving them merely as an oral agreement;
  • Signatures of both parties of the deal. If the deal includes more than one buyer or seller, all of them have to sign the document.

Does a Bill of Sale Have to Be Notarized in South Carolina?

South Carolina Bills of Sale do not require notarization in order to be valid. However, you may want to add it for extra protection. The document should be filled out in two copies for each party to keep one.
