Mississippi Firearm Laws

Nowadays, the State of Mississippi has very non-restrictive firearm laws. It is a constitutional carry state which means you do not need to obtain a permit to carry a firearm. No specific documents are needed when transferring ownership of firerams. Sellers, however, are advised to complete a bill of sale for their own safety.

Traditionally, this document includes the following information:

1. Parties' full names, addresses, and a valid form of identification;
2. Description of the firearm - its type and model, caliber, serial number, barrel length, customizations, accessories, and other distinctive features that can be used to identify the gun;
3. Price of the gun and the method of payment. The parties may use mobile or internet banking, cash, or email transfers;
4. Date and location of the sale;
5. Warranties and guarantees. Usually, the gun is being sold "as is" - in its present condition, or with given or implied guarantees;
6. Signatures of the parties. A bill of sale is legal once both parties write their signatures. Since there is no mandatory legislation or licensing in Mississippi, the purchaser becomes the new legal owner of the firearm. However, the buyer may need to obtain a permit to carry a gun in certain areas.

The law states that a gun must be in a sheath or holster when carried. However, two types of permits are still available for reciprocity between states - a standard firearms permit and an enhanced permit.

The first type is useful if you travel out of state a lot and it can be obtained by residents and non-residents alike. The second option is available to Mississippi residents only. You might want to acquire an enhanced version of the firearms permit to be able to carry a gun in other locations. Enhanced permit holders can carry firearms in off-limit areas, such as courthouses and schools, but not police stations, jails, prisons, or detention centers.

Firearm laws in Mississippi allow any resident of the state who is at least 21 years of age (18 if a member of the military) and has not had any violent misdemeanor convictions within the last 3 years to apply for the permit. This document is valid for five years and its duration may be extended.
