How to Sell a Boat in Maryland?

In order to sell a vessel and transfer a boat title in Maryland you need to provide a buyer with the following documents:

  • Properly assigned original title;
  • Original certified or notarized Bill of Sale;
  • Original lien release (if applicable).

Fill out the transfer section on the back of the boat title. Make sure you do not leave any required fields blank. If the Certificate of Title does not contain the name of the buyer, purchase price, or date of sale, you must provide the buyer with the certified or notarized Bill of Sale. Complete the form as follows:

  1. Specify the hull identification number of the boat, its manufacturer, year, and length.
  2. Provide information about the motor: the serial number, manufacturer, model, and horsepower.
  3. Enter the vessel registration number or the U.S. Coast Guard documentation number.
  4. Indicate the date of sale and the sales price.
  5. Provide additional information necessary to complement the description of the vessel: the boat type, hull material, propulsion, and fuel used.
  6. Enter full names of all buyers (including the middle name).
  7. Specify the mailing address of the buyer.
  8. Provide full names and mailing addresses of all sellers.
  9. If the vessel you sell was not numbered or documented before, you must provide sufficient explanations, containing the date you received the described boat, the name of the previous owner, and the reason it was not numbered.
  10. By signing and dating the form, you affirm that the details you entered on this document are true and correct.

Register the form at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR services) or mail it to the DNR Center. If your title shows a lien recorded on the boat, provide the buyer with the original lien release. Remember that you must notify the department about the transfer of your boat within 15 days. The notification must contain the name and address of the buyer, the date of sale, and the sales price. You can submit it in person, by mail, or by fax. If you want to request a refund for the second year of your two-year vessel registration, complete Form DNR 158-A, Application for Refund, and submit it with the registration card and unused decals to the DNR Service Center.
