What Is a Funeral Invitation?

Funerals take place to celebrate the life of a loved one who has passed. At funeral services, we reconnect with family, are reminded to cherish those that are close to us, and support each other in a difficult time. A Funeral Invitation is a formal invite to a funeral service that is sent out to the family, friends, and anyone else that may have had a close relationship with the person that passed. Funeral Service Invitations can be hand-delivered, sent via snail mail, or sent electronically.

Alternate Names:

  • Funeral Invitation Card;
  • Funeral Service Invitation.

There are many ways in which people hold funeral services. For some, it looks like a party where people are laughing, dancing, and wearing all white. For others, it may look more like a somber gathering where people are outwardly grieving, retelling fond memories of their loved one, and wearing black. Depending on how you approach someone’s departure, your Funeral Invitation Card is going to follow a certain style.

How to Write a Funeral Invitation?

Creating a Funeral Invitation is similar to the creation of any other type of invitation card. If you would like to make your own Funeral Service Invitation or already have your template, be sure to have all the necessary components of a Funeral Invitation.

  1. An appropriate design with a photo of the departed.

    • For example, if your style is more like a party, you may want to choose a color scheme that is vibrant. If the style of the service is somber in nature, go for muted colors;
    • Additionally, the typography should be considered. Depending on the style of the service, go with a fun or professional design;
    • Keep in mind, the funeral invitation card sets the tone for the event and must be legible;
    • In your design, consider making the name and photo of the departed larger to bring the viewer’s attention to these elements and create visual hierarchy. You may also want to include their birth year or date as well as the year or date they departed.
  2. Appropriate Funeral Invitation Wording.

    • To respect the person that passed and their family, use respectful and polite wording. Keep in mind that no matter the style of the service, this is a serious event and should be treated as such.
  3. All the details guests need.

  4. Choose the material you would like your Funeral Invitation printed on.

    • Depending on the type of paper you choose, the quality and strength of your invitation will vary. If the Funeral Service Invitation is traditionally kept, consider choosing a premium or deluxe paper so that they can take more damage before being ruined.
  5. Choose the finish of your Funeral Invitation.

    • Choose a finish that corresponds with your style of service;
    • A few common finishes are Matte, Gloss, and Uncoated. A Matte finish will provide a low sheen and vibrant colors. A Gloss finish will be shiny and make the colors pop. An Uncoated finish will have a natural texture and provide a softer and warmer look.
