A Body Surface Area Chart is used to determine the body surface of an individual which is often required in medical instances and is preferred to looking at the overall body weight of an individual. The reason for this is that Body Surface Area Charts provide a more precise measure of metabolic mass which refers to the energy requirements of an individual.
The mass without fat can be calculated, which is the entirety of an individual's body weight that doesn't take into account the fat percentage, and then this information may be used to determine metabolic mass. This comprises the blood, nerve cells, muscle tissue, internal organs, bones, and so on. The mass of an individual without fat is a reliable indicator of metabolic mass because it does not include body fat, which is not metabolically active.
The body surface area will vary depending on both the age and gender of the individual. In males, this value is slightly elevated compared to females, even when comparing newborns. The importance of this lies in the fact that the results of the body surface area will dictate how an individual needs to be treated and the required dosage. This is particularly important to those patients that are going through chemotherapy or that suffer from heart problems.
Through the use of this chart, an individual either independently or at a medical facility can determine their own body surface area which will tell them more about their metabolism and mass, allowing them to make any necessary changes if they are unhappy with their overall general health. On the opposite side of the scale, an individual may understand that their large mass is not related to fat.
