How Do Football Squares Work?

Football Squares work by offering each individual the chance to pick a square on the grid. In some cases, the organizer may also charge a small fee for the participants to pay which will contribute to the overall prize fund. Once a winner is determined, the winner will take home the winnings.

In order to ensure everything is organized properly, the initiator will need to:

  • Start by making the actual grid, a simple 10x10 grid that can be hand drawn, created in a Microsoft Word document or if you want to save time you can download a template;
  • The row and column should be numbered from 0-9 in numerical order. Both team names should also be written adjacent to the digits;
  • Each square on the grid will represent a score at the end of a quarter. The participant must think about the score that will be achieved after every quarter;
  • Think about how you will distribute these squares, you need to start early to make sure you get as many people taking part as possible;
  • Record their predictions in the grid using their initials.

How to Score Football Squares?

Scoring in Football Squares is sometimes more down to luck than anything else, but if you are an individual that regularly follows American football and knows the teams facing off quite well, you may have a greater chance of winning.

There are no specific Football Squares rules, but generally, all players participating in the party game should:

  • Predict what score they think both teams will reach in every quarter;
  • Participants must pay a small fee, usually around $1 but this can of course be altered to be as small or big as you like. The winner will take home the prize money so the more money you collect, the happier the winner will be. However, try to avoid setting big fees as this can deter people from signing up to take part;
  • Once the grid is formed, participants will select one square and their initials will be added to that square. The participant whose numbers match the scores for every quarter will be the winner;
  • For example, if team A scores 13 points and team B scores 22, the person that placed their bet on a 3 in the top half of the square (which represents the second digit of team A’s score) and a 2 in the bottom half (second digit of team B’s score) will be the winner for that particular quarter;
  • If you want to create an extra special atmosphere, you could have the participants be delegated a random number on the grid by picking their name from a hat for example. This makes the whole process more random and means that anyone can be the winner, regardless of whether or not they follow American football.

How Do You Win Football Squares?

Although Football Squares is a fun party game, every participant wants to have a shot at winning – particularly if there is a cash prize available. For the best chances to win, there are strategies that you need to consider which can help boost your chances.

Most people are aware that the best numbers for Football Squares are 7, 3, and 0 as statistically, these are the most popular numbers to come up since records began with a whopping 63%. However, there are other strategies that you can try to implement to boost your chances of taking home the cash prize:

  • The least likely numbers to come up as a score are 2 and 8 – try to steer away from these numbers;
  • Number 4 comes up quite frequently, just over 10% of the time (closely being 7, 3, and 0);
  • Number 5 is the least likely to land you a chance of winning as this number is the least popular, only accounting for just over 2% of the scores;
  • The most popular numbers from the first to fourth quarter are 0 and 0, 0 and 3, 3 and 7, 4 and 7 respectively.

Remember, the most important thing is that everyone has fun and enjoys the party!
