Car Rental is a service for renting a motor vehicle with or without a driver for a certain period of time. A rented vehicle can be the perfect solution if you have a driving license but do not have your own car.

They are especially handy on occasions when there is an urgent need to get somewhere - like an impromptu business meeting or a move that came out of nowhere. Recreational vehicle rental can also be a nice way to discover more on your journey. The option to rent a car with a driver can be useful when you do not have a driver’s license (either completely or temporarily).

How to Rent a Vehicle?

To rent a car you must have a valid driver's license and a credit card to serve as proof of your identity. Every company that provides vehicle rental has catalogs in their office or official website, where you can find all the necessary information: a list of all cars with technical descriptions and the rental price for each model. You can also order, book, and pay for the service with the help of a consultant.

The key point that finalizes a booking is signing a Vehicle Rental Agreement or a Vehicle Lease Agreement. The agreement must contain the following information:

  • Detailed identification information of the rental vehicle: make, model, year, VIN, color;
  • The estimated term of the rental (start and end dates) or term of the lease;
  • The scope of use. Write for which purposes the car may be used and the names of the people who are allowed to operate the rented vehicle and other operating conditions;
  • Mileage;
  • Conditions of payment, rental price including fees, deposit;
  • Obligations of the rented car user in the event of an accident, vehicle damage, engine breakdown, and penalties;
  • Insurance;
  • Full personal information of both parties of the deal;
  • Date and signatures.

After the period prescribed in the contract expires, the rental vehicle needs to be returned to the company and the person that rented the car needs to pay for the time they used with the rental.

How Old Do You Have to Be to Drive a Rental Car?

Car rental requirements vary among companies. Sometimes a certain age of a lessee, minimum driving experience, and/or an International Driving Permit may be required. The agreement may include a restriction on the daily mileage of the car (excess is paid for each mile), restrictions on the territory of driving. In some companies, lessees with no driving experience are provided with a rental service at higher prices.

For those who are younger than 25 years, it will be complicated to find an agency, since most of them do not rent their cars for lessees under the age of 25. Fortunately, newer carsharing companies are ready to rent out if you are 21 or even 18, but you might need to pay extra.

Who Pays for Rental Car After an Accident?

When the rental car is involved in an accident, the consequences lie with the liability of the lessee, unless otherwise specified in the Rental Agreement. Don’t forget to check the rental vehicle for all pre-existing damage (especially before signing a Moving Vehicle Rental Agreement - these can get damaged easily). Another essential point is rental car insurance. In the event of an accident having insurance will cover most damage.

Contact your car rental agent for all types of insurance to cover repair costs for damage caused by an accident. Some other penalties may also be applied under the contract: for an unwashed car, a car returned with damage to the cabin and body, lack of fuel.
