Does New Jersey Require a Bill of Sale?
The State of New Jersey does not offer any government-released forms you can fill out to document the sale of your property. Generally, you can fill out any basic template and it will be considered valid as long as it contains all necessary information.
All New Jersey Bills of Sale are usually subdivided into four types according to their purpose. These types are as follows:
- Generic. The document is typically used to record the transfer of personal property and other minor items from one private party to another. However, it can also be used in the case when no specific bill of sale is available;
- Vehicle. It is created to document the fact of sale of a motor vehicle. The form usually contains a full description of the sold car and the transfer conditions;
- Boat. This form is completed to record the transfer of all kinds of vessels. It should contain a full description of the boat, including the year, make, type, length, and the material used for construction, and source of power, as this information will be required to title the boat;
- Firearm. This document is completed during the sale of both the handguns and the long guns within the state.
One case when New Jersey authorities require a bill of sale is when you want to title a newly acquired boat bought in a state that does not title a watercraft. In this case, the document must be certified by a notary public. Another case is when you sell your vehicle and you have to provide this document to the buyer. In all other situations, it is optional, however, both parties often prefer to complete the document anyway, since this form:
- Contains basic important information about the deal;
- Allows to provide a more detailed description that those, provided on the title or to record the additional terms of sale if any;
- Serves as a purchase receipt;
- Proves the buyer is the new owner of the described item;

The document is usually prepared in two original copies. One copy stays with the seller, the other one goes to the buyer. A typical Bill of Sale in New Jersey includes:
- Name and address of the seller;
- Name and address of the buyer;
- A detailed description of the sold item (including the serial number if any) that allows to identify it unmistakably;
- Date of sale;
- The sales price in US dollars (the sellers often prefer to record the price both in words and in digits);
- Additional terms of sale if any;
