Does New Jersey Require a Bill of Sale?

The State of New Jersey does not offer any government-released forms you can fill out to document the sale of your property. Generally, you can fill out any basic template and it will be considered valid as long as it contains all necessary information.

All New Jersey Bills of Sale are usually subdivided into four types according to their purpose. These types are as follows:

  1. Generic. The document is typically used to record the transfer of personal property and other minor items from one private party to another. However, it can also be used in the case when no specific bill of sale is available;
  2. Vehicle. It is created to document the fact of sale of a motor vehicle. The form usually contains a full description of the sold car and the transfer conditions;
  3. Boat. This form is completed to record the transfer of all kinds of vessels. It should contain a full description of the boat, including the year, make, type, length, and the material used for construction, and source of power, as this information will be required to title the boat;
  4. Firearm. This document is completed during the sale of both the handguns and the long guns within the state.
