Tooth Chart: What Is It?

A Tooth Chart refers to any chart that concerns teeth or their development. It is not strictly limited to an Adult Tooth Chart and a Child Tooth Chart; such charts can also cover the health of teeth as well as the teeth of animals.

Alternate Name:

  • Teeth Chart.

Although they all may differ in some ways and provide different pieces of information, the purpose remains the same. The main aim is to provide specific information about teeth that will allow an individual to draw comparisons using the chart, using it to analyze information and decide if the current state or development of a tooth (or teeth) is within the norm or if the observations deviate from the norm. If so, it could require medical attention and if this is ignored, it could lead to further health complications.

For example, in the case of a Kids Teeth Chart it will allow parents to see if the teeth of their child are developing as expected, and if any anomalies are discovered, the parents can act right away by seeking medical advice from a dentist. Perhaps this could be the difference between having straight, healthy teeth and getting braces in the future.

How to Read a Tooth Chart?

Reading a Tooth Chart is not a difficult process, no matter what type you are using. From animals and children to adults and tooth color – all of this information is read in the same manner as it follows the standard basic principles of any chart.

  • First of all, you need to find the appropriate Tooth Chart based on the information you require;
  • In general, any chart will contain the structure of the jaw, be it that of an adult, child, or an animal. You first need to familiarize yourself with what parts of the jaw (top and bottom, left and right) you are looking at so that you can determine teeth in the correct manner;
  • Once you have established the structural components of the jaw, you need to determine the tooth ordering system and find out the correct order but most importantly, understanding from which side we start counting the teeth;
  • All other information is usually annotated on or around the main diagram such as problematic areas, missing teeth, the coloration of teeth, etc.;
  • This information can then be used to assess the hygiene, development, and treatment of teeth in children, adults, and animals. This provides an opportunity to eradicate any issues if these are found.
