The U.S. Department of Justice - Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was a government agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws in the United States. It was primarily responsible for regulating and overseeing immigration and naturalization processes, border control, and immigration enforcement. The INS was dissolved in 2003 and its functions were split into three separate agencies: U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
