What Is a Face Mask?

A Face Mask is a protective covering for the nose and mouth made out of paper, non-woven fabric, or disposable polystyrene. Wear a mask to protect yourself, your family, and everyone else you have contact with - it is a simple yet effective way to reduce the odds of getting sick and spreading diseases. Combined with other means of protection like keeping your distance from others and regularly washing your hands, a properly put on Face Mask will make a big difference for your personal health and hygiene as well as for society.

How to Make a Face Mask?

These tips will allow you to prepare a Face Mask from scratch:

1. Create a custom Face Mask out of fabric and make sure the material is thick enough - if it is too easy to see through the fabric, the choice is wrong; consider adding several layers to the mask, leave space for a small pocket where you can put a filter, and design a mask with folds to give you more airflow through the material. The best Face Mask is composed of several layers of polypropylene - if you have access to this material, you can protect yourself better.

2. Motivate other people to wear masks more often by designing your own Face Mask - put a fancy logo on it or add a small symbol or drawing to attract the attention of adults and children. 3. Do not forget to try the mask on to check if it fits you well, if it is comfortable enough, and whether your breathing is normal while it is on. When you breathe out, the front of the mask should be slightly warm, and there cannot be any air coming from the edges of the Face Mask.

2. If your doctor told you specific health concerns or conditions you may have put you at risk when it comes to various infections, it may be necessary to wear a Face Mask outside. While the chances of getting a disease are rather low in these circumstances, it is better to be safe than sorry especially when you already deal with a health problem.

3. If you were diagnosed with an infectious disease, are in contact with a sick patient, or have symptoms that make you believe you may be currently sick, put on a Face Mask. Whether your immune system is weak or not and no matter how many vaccines and boosters you got, you may be infected already and unknowingly harm others by spreading the sickness - a Face Mask is a good way to minimize the chances of that.

4. Try not to touch your face and especially the mask while it is on - only do it if necessary and after washing your hands or applying hand sanitizer. Do not forget to change the mask every few hours or when you notice it is damaged or wet meaning its protective abilities are gone. A mask that does not cover the nose, is hanging under the chin, or has big gaps on the sides is useless so remember to choose the right size of mask when creating your own or purchasing one in a store.
