A Periodontal Chart refers to a visual graph that contains images of teeth and boxes used to indicate the symptoms of periodontitis.
Alternate Name:
Dentists, dental hygienists, and medical students studying anatomy use this tool to understand how big the space between the tooth and the gum is. This information is essential to diagnose periodontitis - a disease that causes swollen gums, constant bleeding, and bad breath. Make sure you offer your patients to undergo a thorough examination to quickly notice the signs of this harmful disease and prevent it from spreading further affecting an entire jaw. Besides, quite often this issue is triggered by the person brushing incorrectly or ignoring floss - a medical professional in charge of the check-up will be able to advise the former to care about their teeth properly.

Every patient that is going to be potentially treated for periodontitis gets their own chart - the doctor will conduct the check-up assessing the state of the teeth and gums. They will probe the pocket of space and measure the depth in millimeters recording the results on the chart for every single tooth. The readings can vary - if the depth is below three millimeters and there is no bleeding, the gums are healthy; if the pocket is deeper and blood appears during the examination, the patient is going through a stage of periodontitis which requires treatment and sometimes even surgery.
Dentists often draw lines on teeth depicted on the chart using different colors to demonstrate how deeply the teeth are affected - it is likely some of them need immediate medical attention while others can be healthy again after prescribed antibiotics or deep cleaning procedures.
