What Is a Pattern Block?
A Pattern Block is a colorful piece of paper, plastic, or wood with a flat surface that can be combined with other similar pieces to create a recognizable shape. Pattern Blocks are a great source of entertaining education for little kids - whether you are spending time with your children or teaching kindergarten students, it is important to help them develop pattern recognition skills through shapes and colors. The kids will understand the shapes of various physical objects, construct items or entire scenes they can play with, and learn how to identify patterns with visual aids.

It is up to you to decide what material will work for you - paper remains the easiest tool especially if you are printing out different colorful shapes; you may also glue paper to plastic or wood to make a more durable toy. Give the kid dozens of Pattern Blocks in different colors and offer them to put the pieces together. For instance, numerous blocks shaped like squares, triangles, trapezoids, and parallelograms can be combined to create an animal or bird - this way, the child will have an opportunity to learn more about the world around them through play.
You may help the young kid with this task by preparing a guide you are working on as you are making the Pattern Blocks - come up with different shapes that can represent different body parts (tails, ears, beaks, etc.) and combine the pieces together to give the child a manual; alternatively, provide the kid with more realistic images and illustrations that show living creatures or items they are supposed to build with Pattern Blocks and see how well they are able to handle this task.
