Drug Classifications Chart: What Is It?

A Drug Classifications Chart outlines the way that drugs are characterized into five different classifications, referred to as “five schedules.” The use of the chart creates a system for classifying medications into distinct schedules based on their commonalities. Those who struggle with addiction should keep a close eye on and familiarize themselves with drug schedules and classifications.

A Drug Classification Chart will also list a number of the most often abused medicines and help differentiate between those that can be medically beneficial and those that are not. Drugs can be introduced, deleted or rescheduled at any given time and this has been the case since the first implementation.

The five schedules are briefly outlined below:

  • First: they have no medicinal purpose and frequently carry a significant risk of misuse and examples include heroin;
  • Second: are infamous for the strong abuse potential and extreme mental or physical dependency. The medications have established medicinal usefulness in spite of the considerable risk of abuse and are typically exclusively available with a prescription;
  • Third: have a medium to minimal risk of dependency. Nonetheless, if misused, they will become a concern;
  • Forth: due to their unique medical applications, such drugs have minimal potential for addiction and abuse. When used in combination with other medicines, they may present a significant physical or mental risk;
  • Fifth: are considerably less likely to be abused and become dependent.
