Pain Chart Faces: What Are They?

Pain Chart Faces are a visual diagram that demonstrates the levels of pain by portraying them via facial expressions - stylized drawings or emoticons.

Alternate Name:

  • Wong Baker Faces Scale.

It is shown by doctors to their patients in order to analyze the symptoms better through a spectrum of painful sensations they may experience or have experienced prior to the doctor's appointment. While this instrument is typically associated with medical examinations of little kids that cannot speak yet or are unable to describe their symptoms properly for the right treatment to be prescribed, it has been noted that the chart can be beneficial to older children if they struggle to put their feelings into words.

This scale typically contains the faces positioned from left to right to show the increase in pain - a smiling face means lack of pain while a distorted grimacing face reveals a patient cannot handle the ache caused by their illness or injury. It is advised to add small descriptions of every face under the chart and assign numbers to different levels of pain. The chart goes from zero to ten covering physical pain - the doctor is supposed to examine the patient and later communicate with them (sometimes, with their parents helping out) to figure out what drawing better reflects the current state of the patient choosing the appropriate treatment based on this information.
